Sitman Scalp Consult

Know the options

Noticing thinner hair? Learn what you can ask about

From changes in care to topical or oral options a doctor may prescribe, here is what each option is, described in general terms.

Medical, procedural and cosmetic

It can help to sort thinning hair options into three groups before a consultation.

  1. Medical. Topical or oral options that a doctor may prescribe after looking at your history and scalp.
  2. Procedural. In-office procedures some providers offer, such as PRP or low-level light, and hair transplant surgery, which is discussed with a surgeon at a separate consultation.
  3. Cosmetic. Toppers, hair systems, wigs, cuts and styling that change how hair looks without any treatment.

Providers differ in what they offer. A licensed provider decides what is suitable for you.

Your history matters

Thinning hair options are not one size fits all, and your history shapes what a provider is likely to discuss. They may ask about blood pressure, heart conditions, pregnancy or plans to become pregnant, breastfeeding, and every medicine and supplement you take.

Answer as fully as you can, and ask why each question matters. Some prescription options are not suitable for some people, and a provider needs the full picture to decide. If a provider suggests an option without asking much about your health, it is reasonable to ask how they decided. A licensed provider decides what is suitable for you.

Before a thinning hair consultation

  • List every medicine and supplement you take, with doses.
  • Note any pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans to become pregnant.
  • Write a rough timeline of when the thinning started and what was happening then.
  • Gather a few photos of your hair from the past few years.
  • Note anything you have already tried and how long you used it.
  • Think about which kinds of options you are open to: prescription, in-office, surgical or cosmetic.
  • Write down your questions, including cost.

Bring what you have. The provider will ask about the rest.

Questions about thinning hair options

What options might a provider discuss for thinning hair?

A provider may talk about topical or oral options a doctor may prescribe, in-office procedures some providers offer such as PRP or low-level light, a consultation with a hair transplant surgeon, or cosmetic options such as toppers, hair systems and styling. A licensed provider decides what is suitable for you.

Can I ask about a hair transplant?

Yes. A provider may refer you to a hair transplant surgeon, or you can ask for a consultation with one directly. The surgeon looks at your scalp and talks through whether surgery is worth considering, what recovery involves and what it costs.

Are toppers and hair systems an option?

They are, and some people choose them alone or alongside other steps. Ask how a topper or system attaches, how it is cared for, how often it is replaced and who fits it. A stylist who works with thinning hair can also suggest cuts and parting.

A provider in or near Miami can look at what is going on and talk you through possible next steps.
